And the hyped killed it for my upon my first viewing.
Murder set pieces plot movie#
I was dying to see the movie that M-S-P was hyped to be, but not the one I actually saw.īUT.I have only seen it once. There are plenty of reasons to dislike this film that are right there on the screen. There are reasons to dislike this movie that have nothing to do with the controversy, the marketing, or the filmmakers. I wouldn't be suprised if the baby used in the film grows up to be the leader of the local chapter of the Trenchcoat Mafia. Why did he go from killing grown women to children? And the only shock I got from it was the fact that there are parents out there that allowed there children to appear. In M-S-P, I felt it was used simply to shock. I feel the use of children in those films came naturally from the plot. I have seen children used in horro films to great effect.Mordum, In a Glass Cage, Salo. To me, the use of the children signaled a lack of imagination on the filmmakers part. I just found the movie to be way too overhyped.Īnd I think the only place in the film where he truly pushed the limit was with the scenes involving children.Īnd I don't think it worked. 02 is worth at least $1.50 around here.but I didn't like M-S-P.Īnd I do consider myself a hardcore horror fan. But underneath all of that, I think there's a guy who's genuinely bothered by the fact that he set out to make a balls-out horror film and succeeded, then got nothing but grief from his heros and the fans who supposedly were "dying" for that kind of film. I think he occasionally makes some outrageous statements for the same reason-any publicity is good publicity. I've no doubt he'd fan the flames from time to time just to keep the film relevant. The controversy has helped sell the movie. I think Nick took the opportunity to respond.ĭon't get me wrong-I'm sure there's a part of Nick that loves the controversy. Sometimes, you have to just let it all go-but other times, things are so egregious and wrong that you have to respond.
Murder set pieces plot skin#
What other venue does he have? You have to have thick skin to make films, write books, make music, or even write film criticism (believe me, I get my fair share of hatemail). The commentary track gives him a few opportunities to respond to people who've singled him out as the anti-christ. I look at that commentary track and I see a guy who made a film that he wanted to make and he genuinely believed the real horror fans would love. The guy grew by light years as a filmmaker. If you've seen Nick's earlier film, Nutbag, then see MSP, it's just a huge difference. If I made a feature film on par with M-S-P, you can rest assured that I'd be talking about it whenever I got the chance. At the same time, I can understand why Nick so shamelessly self-promotes it at every chance he gets: if he doesn't, who will? Besides, there's nothing really wrong with being proud of your work. I can understand that some people have found the fact that Nick sent out a very rude "street team" to promote the film (which in turn spammed the hell out of every board they could find) makes them not want to see the movie.
I don't get Bill Lustig's indignant outrage, either. I don't understand how Mitch Davis (who runs the Fant-Asia Film Festival) could reject the film for the festival, when they've proudly shown Nacho Cerda's Aftermath in years past. I don't really understand why his film has inspired such hatred amongst some people who purport to love horror movies.
I can't say that I disagree with him, either.
I think some of the attitude in that commentary track is because he's been genuinely stung by the criticism of his film-particularly from the "hardcore horror fan" community. When we've spoken, he's always been very self-effacing. Having talked with Nick a lot over the course of the past year, I can say that he's really not an egotistical dickhead.
